North Head Lighthouse, along with Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, helps local fishing boats and ocean-going ships navigate the very dangerous water at the western edge of the continent. The Columbia River bar is one of the most dangerous in the world. Winter winds at Cape Disappoint have been clocked at 160 mph.

To make North Head Lighthouse even more interesting, there are those who believe the lighthouse is haunted by one keeper's wife who flung herself over the steep cliffs. Perhaps it was the wind and the long gloomy winters so common in this part of the world that drove her to her death in 1923. Perhaps she was unable to take the long, unending, dreary days and decided to committed suicide.
