Battery Russell, located in Fort Stevens State Park, at Hammond, Oregon, was completed being built in August of 1904. Battery Russell was the only US fortification in the lower 48 states to come under fire by a foreign power since 1814 when a Japanese submarine fired several shells toward the battery on June 20, 1942.
